چکیده

In a previous paper we (Diggle and Gage, 1954) have referred to published statements that the toxicity of ozone is increased if oxides of nitrogen are present and we have suggested the hypothesis that if, in fact, this is so, then the increased toxicity is likely to be due to the presence of nitrogen pentoxide, to which the lower oxides of nitrogen are converted by ozone. As a first step to establish this, we undertook a study of the toxicity of nitrogen pentoxide and we demonstrated that it is a " lung irritant " gas of high potency. Since the appearance of our paper, a careful review of the literature on the toxicity of ozone has been made by Stokinger (1954) from which it is evident that although there is general agreement that ozone produces pulmonary oedema and emphysema, there are wide variations in the concentrations which are regarded as necessary to produce these symptoms. A direct comparison of the results of various investigators is rendered difficult by the use of different experimental conditions and species, by different degrees of purity of the ozone, and by deficient or faulty analytical control of the test atmospheres. In the investigation described in the present paper, we have measured the toxicity of ozone to rats and the effect thereon of the presence of added amounts of nitrogen dioxide, and we have studied the extent to which this can be attributed to the analytically determined amounts of nitrogen pentoxide present. We have also made analytical measurements on an industrial atmosphere where conditions are favourable for the production of ozone together with oxides of nitrogen.

Study of tropospheric ozone concentration trend of Kermanshah by meteorological parameter and ozone precursor and OMI images

Abstract: Clean air is a necessity for human well-being and health. Air pollution is a major threat to humans and other organisms and is considered as one of the environmental challenges. Today, with the increase in air pollution, the need to know more about the causes of its occurrence has been raised. The various consequences of air pollution have made air quality monitoring and control inev...

A Reactivity Based Emission Inventory for the South Pars and Its Implication for Ozone Pollution Control

The South Pars zone in Iran encompasses the largest gas refineries and petrochemical complexes in the world. In the South Pars zone, elevated concentrations of reactive hydrocarbons co-emitted with nitrogen oxides from industrial facilities lead to substantial ozone production downwind. To understand the role of these emissions on the ozone formation and, to formulate appropriate control st...

The toxicity of nitrogen pentoxide.

There is no evidence in the literature that nitrogen pentoxide (N205), the highest known oxide of nitrogen, has ever been the subject of a toxicological investigation. This gas rapidly breaks down to give nitrogen dioxide and oxygen, but is known to be stabilized by the presence of ozone, and several investigators (Schumacher and Sprenger, 1929; Johnston, 1951) have studied the complex system o...

Assessment of the Air Quality of Isfahan City, Iran, Using Selected Air Quality Parameters

Background: Today, air pollution is one of the major problems in large cities including Isfahan. Methods: The objective of this study was to investigate the variations of ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur dioxide (SO2), and particulate matter (PM10) concentrations in different months at three stations and also to explore ...

The Evaluation of Tropospheric Ozone Formation in the Downwind of the South Pars Industrial Zone

Hydrocarbon Processing Industries (HPIs) emit large amounts of highly reactive hydrocarbons and Nitrogen Oxides to the atmosphere. Such simultaneous emissions of ozone precursors result in rapid and high yields ozone (O3) formation downwind. The climate of the Middle East has been shown to be favorable for O3 formation in summer. There are also vast activities in processing oil and gas in this ...
